How to show up in Google AI Overviews for local services
Google’s AI Overviews are the AI-generated summaries that appear above the classic results for many searches, and for local ones they can name businesses. The good news for contractors: AI Overviews sit on top of Google’s existing local ranking, so what gets you into the local pack is largely what gets you into the Overview. This is the most familiar of the three — it’s local SEO, with an AI summary layered on top.
A note on honesty first: Cited does not scrape or measure Google AI Overviews — doing so violates Google’s terms, and we won’t. Our free audit measures ChatGPT and Perplexity through official APIs. This page is educational guidance for AI Overviews, drawn from how Google’s local ranking is known to work — not a claim that we track it.

How Google AI Overviews pick local businesses
- They build on Google’s local ranking, not a separate system. For local queries, AI Overviews draw on the same machinery as the map pack — your Google Business Profile, proximity, and relevance. If you rank well in the local results, you’re in the pool the Overview summarizes from.
- Your Google Business Profile does the heavy lifting. A complete, active profile — correct categories, service area, hours, photos, and a steady flow of reviews — is the single strongest lever. It’s the primary source Google trusts for who you are and what you do.
- Reviews, NAP consistency, and local content still decide it. Recent reviews, the same name, address, and phone everywhere, and genuine local service-area pages are what move you up the local ranking that feeds the Overview. LocalBusiness structured data helps Google parse you correctly.
- Google-Extended governs your content’s use in AI features. Google-Extended is the control for whether your site’s content can be used to ground and train Google’s generative features. Allowing it keeps you eligible to be drawn on, and it’s separate from ordinary Google Search indexing.
How to get recommended by AI (and win Google at the same time)
- Claim and complete your Google Business Profile. AI assistants lean heavily on Google Business data. A complete profile — correct categories, service area, hours, photos, and a steady flow of recent reviews — is the single biggest lever for both AI mentions and the local map pack.
- Publish clear service-area and service pages. One page per service and per city you cover, in plain language, so an assistant can tell exactly what you do and where. Vague one-page sites are invisible to both crawlers and AI.
- Add LocalBusiness structured data. Schema.org markup for your name, address, phone, service area, and reviews helps engines parse you correctly. It is one of the cheapest, highest-leverage fixes and helps classic search at the same time.
- Earn reviews and answer common questions on-site. Review volume and recency are strong trust signals. An FAQ block that answers the real questions homeowners ask gives assistants quotable, citable text — often the exact sentence they surface.
- Get listed in the directories AI actually reads. Consistent name/address/phone across the directories and review sites that answer engines cite builds the corroboration they need before recommending you by name.

Frequently asked questions
Does Cited track Google AI Overviews?
No. We deliberately do not scrape or measure AI Overviews — it would violate Google’s terms. Our free audit measures ChatGPT and Perplexity through official APIs. This page is honest educational guidance on AI Overviews based on how Google’s local ranking works, not a tracking claim.
How do I appear in Google AI Overviews for my trade?
Win Google’s local ranking: keep a complete, active Google Business Profile, earn recent specific reviews, keep your name, address, and phone consistent everywhere, publish genuine service-area pages, and add LocalBusiness structured data. Because AI Overviews build on local ranking, the same work that gets you into the map pack gets you into the Overview.
Is this just local SEO?
Largely, yes — that’s the honest answer. AI Overviews add an AI summary on top of Google’s existing local results, so there’s no separate trick. The Google Business Profile, reviews, and consistent listings that win the local pack are what put you in the Overview.
What is Google-Extended?
Google-Extended is a robots control for whether Google can use your site’s content to ground and train its generative AI features, including AI Overviews. It’s separate from normal Search indexing — allowing it keeps your content eligible to be drawn on in AI answers.
